Flutes are beautiful instruments and are responsible for producing really nice melodies. There are many kinds and varieties of flutes that are available each of it would have its own characteristic and advantages. In fact depending upon the material that these are made of the sound and its versatility would differ accordingly.

One of these would be the bass flute from the family of the flutes. These are made of brass as the name suggests. These would have a J-shaped head. These would create a haunting sound. That is the reason these are included only when special pieces need to be played. Generally speaking these would not have an inclusion in the orchestra.

These came into existence in the 1920s, basically with the idea of jazz than many thing else for that matter. These are not that forceful and that is another reason that these are not used when there are lot more technicalities involved while making music. This was like a substitute for saxophone but definitely less intense than that. If you would compare the bass flute with the other the ease of producing sound is not that great. It is relatively difficult to produce sound with this and at the same time the sound produced is very weak and sharp. Making these perfect for very specific type of music. These would not go higher than A6 – so you can clearly get the picture. Even when the bass flute is played with the other instrument which has the same range as the bass flute; it would not be able to justify the sound that it produces. Hence, this is seen where the jazz stuff is more preferred by adding that haunting sound to it.

Comparing the bass flute with the regular concert flutes, you would see that these are larger and would have a B foot rather than the C foot. These would be more in weight than the concert flute and that is why these would have separate arrangements like the flute leg or the string holding them right while one is playing it.

If you are looking forward to buy one of these J-shaped bass flutes, you might want to run through the reasons again. This might be a very beautiful looking flute but then it would have its own negatives. Unless you are interested in jazz and to make music keeping that as the base, you should not be investing in these bass flutes.
